Masala
In the realm of alternative music, there are bands and then there are Electrifying Bands! MASALA is a fresh young band of rockers that are destined to change the face of music and live performances as we know it. The 5 members of the band are Philip Scantlebury (Lead Vocalist), Toby Armstrong (Solo Guitarist), Ryan Holder (Drummer), Dexter Snagg (Keyboards), and Justin Worrell (Bass Guitar).
As the most experienced of the group and lead vocalist, Philip boasts a musical career that spans over a decade. His first appearance on the music scene was with the acappella group Suave and later with Acoustic Blue. These two groups were stepping-stones on a musical journey that next saw him successfully tackling the new genre of alternative music. It was here in the alternative rock band Le Groove that Philip’s exceptional talent was fully recognized.
The achievements of Le Groove whet Philip’s appetite for success. He went on to join the more musically diverse Toni Norville Band where he further impressed audiences with his ability to expand his range to R&B and reggae. Philip then joined with Kirk Browne to form Strategy and together they reintroduced the concept of ‘live bands’ to the local scene. Philip has now returned to his true musical passion……Alternative rock music and with Masala, his coming of age journey has ended. He embodies the essence of what the Band is about with his infectious personality, magnificent talent, and explosive energy on stage. Philip’s international exposure includes performing at Spring Break events in Margaritaville, Negril, Jamaica, and doing performance showcases for Warner Brothers (Canada) & Sony (Cuba).
Ryan is the drummer for Masala whose background includes performing with the Royal Barbados Police Band and in various Calypso tents during the Crop Over Season. His quiet personality and charming demeanor naturally endear any young lady in his presence. He delivers booming drum patterns on stage which not only enhances the sound of the band but creates rhythms that strike chords with all audiences no matter the venue.
Clearly the comedian in the crew, Dexter (or “Snagg” as he is affectionately called by his peers), has a lighthearted approach to life, but when it’s time to take care of business, he knows when to switch hats. He also plays in the Royal Barbados Police Band alongside Ryan. A keyboardist with an undeniable talent on the ivory, Snagg harmonizes Phillip’s vocals with his melodic notes and soothing tones.
The lead guitarist, Toby, is a versatile musician/producer with many years of experience on the local Barbados music scene as well as at an international level in New York and England. He is one of the most sought-after session guitarists on the island and works with other top acts such as Road House and Hal Linton.
Justin, the musical director of Masala, holds a Bachelor’s degree in Music (Music Technology) from Acadia University in Canada. Justin has worked previously with many bands on the local jazz and calypso circuit; however, his true love for rock music led him to join Masala. A music producer as well, Justin has lent his skills to help produce several of Masala’s current releases as well as many upcoming ones. The “Gentle Giant” that Justin is, gets replaced by his energy emitted through the Bass guitar he wields effortlessly on stage.
